Gau are amulet boxes made of precious metals, turquoise, coral, or other jewels. Traditionally, Tibetans wear them around their neck, and inside the wearer places amulets that can help heal or prevent disease and serve as a protection talisman. Included are papers ‘prescribed’, made and blessed by a Lama to address specific life issues, such as health, happiness, prosperity, protection and attraction; also mantras, pictures, small Buddha statues and Tibetan medicine pills can be put in these special lockets.
This multi-cultural necklace has a center focal quatrefoil gau amulet box of intricately coiled and shaped wire and cabochon set turquoise and coral. Gold plated, gem encrusted and hung with an eclectic mix of fine beads: faceted natural turquoise teardrops, coral snake glass, red pearls, Ghana gilded textured tubes, Tibetan gemstone studded brass balls. This old gau is approximated to be 30 years old and is in very good condition. 3” wide and it opens to hold a prayer.
Phulkari means ‘flower craft’. Phulkari, the rural embroidery tradition of Punjab is a vibrant and striking embroidered shawl. Traditionally, Phulkari was made of a thick cotton fabric known as khaddar. Four colors of khaddar were generally used, and each color had its own significance– white used by older women or widows, red used by young girls and brides-to-be, blue and black were kept for daily use. The khaddar fabric was covered in striking floral or geometric patterns of embroidery.
Our rayon phulkari shawl in deep navy has 3 rows of silver tag sequins, resembling mirror work. The red and turquoise flowers and light taupe starbursts make this one-of-a-kind piece very special. The shawl measures 37″ x 99″. We’ve paired it with this fantastically imposing necklace of resin and turquoise – a skull to be remembered! There’s even a small skull dangling at the end of the 28″ oxidized metal chain. The pendant is a full 6″ including the bail. Click the “you may like” photo below to purchase the necklace.
