KALAMKARI ROSY GARDEN SHAWL

The history of kalamkari textiles is a long and interesting one, especially to our textile-loving tribe.  Kalamkari is the term that refers to the making of any cotton fabric patterned through the medium of vegetable dyes by free-hand and block-printing, produced in many regions of India. In places where the fabric is block printed, the kalam (pen) is used to draw finer details and for application of some colors.  Originally kalamkari involved a 23-step process! The unique first step still used today in the process is steeping the cottons in a bath of buffalo milk and then drying it under the sun.  The last step in the process is somewhat similar to the making of batik prints in that the parts to be dyed blued are left open to the indigo and the rest of the cloth is covered in wax.  This is applied art at its finest with many steps to get to the final product.

Another interesting design detail to this spectacular shawl is the rich gold nizam metallic border weave. Thanks to the Moguls and their rich history, this particular border pays homage to the high aesthetic adopted by this royal clan.
